East Farm Demonstration Vegetable Garden - a College of Environmental and Life Sciences Master Gardener Project

East Farm Demonstration Vegetable Garden provides an educational facility for URI Master Gardeners and the public.

The 7,000 sq. ft. veggie garden and perennial flower gardens at East Farm is completely maintained by URI master gardener volunteers and provides a number of gardening demonstrations including:

  • vertical growing with trellises,
  • container gardening for urban gardeners or back porches,
  • tomato trellises,
  • raised beds,
  • square foot gardening,
  • crop rotation,
  • companion planting for pest control,
  • a fig tree,
  • an asparagus bed,
  • wide rows and mulched paths for weed control,
  • drip irrigation

In addition, we have a composting operation, a Themed Children's garden, and a perimeter perennial flower garden.

Our garden and harvesting volunteers are trained in Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) and our garden is RI GAP certified.

All the vegetables produced are given to the community Food Bank.

In addition to our planting, garden maintenance and harvesting, we provide an Open House to the public with professional and amateur cooking demonstration, garden talks, soil testing and programs for the kids.

This year the Open House is August 11th from 10 am to 2 pm. This event is provided free to the general public.
